Below, you’ll find the most important information regarding the documents and permits required to work in Poland and abroad.

Required Documents and Permits to Work in Poland
To legally work in Poland, foreigners must meet specific requirements related to work permits and other necessary documentation. Here are the most important ones.
A work permit is required for non-EU nationals who plan to work in Poland. The permit is issued by the regional governor (wojewoda) and may be seasonal or long-term, depending on the type of employment.
- Type A Permit – for non-EU citizens who will work in Poland under an employment contract.
- Type B Permit – for individuals in managerial positions within companies operating in Poland.
- Type C Permit – for employees delegated to Poland by a foreign employer.
- Type D Permit – for individuals planning to work in Poland for a specified period under a contract with a foreign company.
Foreigners from outside the European Union who do not hold resident status in Poland must obtain a work visa. The procedure depends on the individual’s nationality and the purpose of travel, and the visa may be issued for either a short or long period.
Foreigners who plan to work in Poland must obtain a PESEL number, which is necessary for tax settlements and social security (ZUS) contributions.
Additionally, if the person runs a business, a NIP number (Tax Identification Number) will also be required.
Every employee must be registered with the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) by their employer to ensure the payment of health, retirement, and disability insurance contributions.
Required Documents and Permits to Work Abroad
The regulations for working in Europe are similar to those in Poland. Below are the most important documents and permits.
Citizens of non-EU countries who plan to work in Germany must obtain a work permit.
Depending on the nature of the job, this permit may be either short-term or long-term. Here are the main types of permits:
- EU Blue Card – for highly qualified professionals from non-EU countries.
- Seasonal Work Permit – for individuals employed in temporary jobs, such as agriculture.
- Work Permit for Unskilled Workers – issued in specific cases, e.g. in the construction or manufacturing industries.
To apply for a job in Europe, non-EU foreigners must obtain a work visa. Work visas vary depending on the level of education, professional qualifications, and the employment contract.
The application process includes, among other things, providing documents that confirm educational background and a job offer from a European employer (e.g. a German company).
Every employee in Europe must obtain a tax identification number. This is required for tax reporting as well as for social security and health insurance contributions.
Abroad, every employee is required to have health insurance. Individuals employed under an employment contract are covered by mandatory insurance through their employer. In the case of self-employment, health insurance must be purchased independently.
For regulated professions (e.g. doctor, teacher), foreigners must obtain recognition of their professional qualifications in other countries. This can be done through the relevant institutions and professional authorities.
